I would like to share this dream with you; although very vivid in my imagination, and surreal, but this is only a portion of a dream I had while in Alabama. I'm sharing it with you to share information on how much you could mean to a person, even though you may not believe it:
Family and friends knew that Kevin had been ill for a while now. His health was failing fast, and time came that he was admitted into the local hospital to spend his last days.
Three days after Kevin's admittance in Washington County Hospital, the family was called in. Piling in by the dozens, family members came from as far as Iraq to see him, and have their last goodbye heard by Kevin. Visions of Kevin lying in a hospital bed, machines and tubes being his only source of life crowded Red's head, and she was reluctant to have her last goodbye heard by him. As the days passed, and other family members asked her why she hadn't been to see Kevin. Her reply was simply stated, "I don't want to see him like that."
One day her mother gave her the most shocking news, "You know, Kevin has asked about you. Why haven't you been to see him?"
"He asked for me?" Red had never felt that she mattered to her uncle. She knew he had family' love for her, but she would have never imagined that he would notice her missing from his crowded visitors' list. Her stomach felt queasy. She wasn't sick, but she felt a strange feeling inside from knowing that her Uncle Kevin just may want to see her before he left this earth. Her fears of hating to see him like that disappeared, and she headed for the hospital.
Walking to the doorway of his hospital room, she noticed the machines, and hesitated to enter completely. Kevin must have sensed her standing there, froze to the frame of the doorway because he turned his head, opened his eyes and held a faint smile across his face. Red crossed the floor to his bedside, tears beginning to take over her face. She smiled back, but it wasn't her usual smiling, bright face that Uncle Kevin always knew of. So he took her hand, and tried to hold on to it. Red could tell his strength wasn't what it used to be because his grip wasn't a grip at all.
Red's Uncle Kevin had told her that he was afraid that he was going to Heaven without having seen her. Tears fell from her eyes, not from hurt, but from disbelief. Kevin could read the disbelief in her eyes, and he shared a story with his favorite niece, telling her how she was his favorite because she reminded him so much of himself; he shared with Red the many times they had spent together, and how those memories were the only thing that kept him going strong these last couple of days and knowing that he could see her one last time to refresh those memories made him feel that things would be okay.
Red had no idea that her uncle had felt that way about the times they had spent together. She held those same memories of learning how to fish, hunt and tend a garden, and as her Uncle Kevin shared his memories, she was able to enjoy the ride down memory lane with him. Those were the good times, she smiled, and felt his soft grip loosen from her hands. She looked over to him, and he had taken his last breath; her Uncle Kevin laid peacefully with a smile on his face. This time, Red cried, but they were tears of joy. Joy to have known such a caring man. Tears from the sweet memories that she had taken for granted. After the nurses came into the room, Red stood and moved toward the door. As she turned to take one last look at her loving uncle, she could have sworn that he winked at her.
Reality Bites! So, take a trip down memory lane as many times as you can handle the joy; don't feel that you don't matter to someone you have fond memories with, because you just may mean the world to them!

Wonderful heartfelt story, Ronyae. Even when you dread seeing a loved one sick and in pain, it would be worse to not see them that one last time. The last time I saw my mother, she didn't even know I was in the room--or, at least, I don't think she did; but one never knows. She may have known and I could never have taken the chance that she would have known that I wasn't there. Thanks for a beautiful article.SandraSandra,She knew. Whether you know, feel, or even want to realize it-she knew. You hold on to that, and carry that joy enough to share with others!Stay Blessed
