How To Clean Your Patio Cushions

No one likes to sit in dirt. At least I don't, and if you're like me, you don't either. But before I share these tips with cleaning your patio cushions, I want to share some outdoor facts with you first:

All of our fabrics are made for outdoor use; fabrics are liquid and stain resistant; It is ok that your fabrics and cushions get wet; fabric is fade, mildew and rot resistant; there is no need to treat your cushions with spot protectors.

With that in mind, we know that there is pretty much anything you can use to clean these patio cushions. So don't be afraid to get down to the ‘nitty-gritty' when you want to clean the patio cushions.

I've even went as far as to using Windex to clean cushions. But I want to give you tips that you can use and share with others...and not many others wish to use Windex on their furniture. But it does work well for small areas, or on the legs on the furniture.

Enough about the furniture, we're on the subject of the cushions.

If your cushions are removable, you can remove them from the base and line them along a fence or wall. Spray the cushions down with a water hose, if possible. If it's not possible to water them down first, it's okay. Watering them down just helps get the ball to rolling on making the cleaning process much easier.

If you have spots from food and drinks on your cushions, you can spot clean those areas by making a cleaning solution of either mild soap and water or vinegar and water, putting that solution in a spray bottle and then spot cleaning those areas. A soft hand brush can also be used on hard to remove stains and/or spots on your patio cushions.

Once you've handled the small stain areas, you can use that same spray bottle solution, spraying generously on the cushion, then wiping it with a rag or cloth. Do this just as you would with washing a window or table. Making sure that you clean the entire cushion.

Some cushion have removable covers. If this is so with your patio cushions, you can easily remove the cushions and try placing them, in your washing machine on a gentle cycle. But don't place them in the dryer because the material may burn.

Either way you decide to clean the patio cushions, after doing so be sure to set the cushions out in the sun to dry completely.

bird lime is a pernicious problem when I daily use my outdoor furniture;what removes the bacteria and viral elements of this poop?

Paul,
Good question, and I would suggest rinsing the spot off with high pressure water, before using a household vinegar and water solution to clean the spot.  I can relate to pesky bird droppings.  Hope it works for you!

Ronyae,

What great advice. While I don't have cushioned furniture, I've always wondered how one kept them from mildewing. Learned much from this. Vinegar is wonderful, isn't it?

My husband is a 'chemist' -- he knows every solution for every problem -- like using Naptha to remove those hard-to-remove labels from jars.

Thanks,

Nancy
