Home Invasion Leaves Neighborhood Concerned; Update on Uncle Joe

I posted an article on my Uncle Joe more than a month ago; a home invasion that left a 60-something man shot more than seven times, and his family praying for a miracle. (Scene at Uncle Joe's home. copyright Ranya E. Snowden)

I'm sharing this write to inform my readers that as of yesterday, Uncle Joe has made a tremendous comeback! It was a touch-and-go situation for a time, but Uncle Joe has surpassed the five surgeries, and is able to do the things he once enjoyed yet again. I'd call that a miracle for sure!

Now, Uncle Joe has recovered from the gunshot wounds, but not the home invasion; he knows who his intruders were, but is not sharing the information with the authorities. When I learned of this, I was against it, and partially still am. But I must admit that I also understand Uncle Joe's reasons for not wanting to share this information with the authorities: He wants to do things his way. And by me just stating that, one would get the notion of Uncle Joe being a 'mafia-type'. Although he may not necessarily be that type, I see it as that way. Am I wrong for that? True, Uncle Joe may have ways of getting to the criminals quicker than the authorities, and be able to get 'revenge' in a most satisfying manner, but isn't that just as bad as what they did to him?

I'm grateful to have my Uncle Joe back among us, and well. But I don't want to have to hear about us losing him again for something that he could have easily left up to the proper authorities.

I know it's hard sometimes not to take matters in your own hands, but isn't it the smartest way to go?

This is a collection in reference to Home Safety and Smart Thinking: Being extra cautious could save a life ... preferably your own!

Ronyae, things like this can be difficult to handle.

I do understand that there are times when the authorities are not effective in solving a crime, but taking the law into your own hands is only going to make things worse in my opinion.

I also understand that there is sometimes an underlying fear that "blowing the whislte" will result in making yourself a target for future violence.

Hopefully your uncle will stay safe, and not get too carried away with his revenge.

Hi Ronyae,

I am glad your uncle is ok....I really think it depends what police department your uncle is dealing with and unfortunately what area he lives in. To think all areas are treated the same I feel is being naive. I wish I believed it was always best to let the authorities handle things but I don't think they always act in the best interest of the communities they are suppose to protect. I think if officers lived in the communities they were assigned to it would go a long way to improving our system of policing and justice. I hope things work our for the best and your Uncle if remains safe and totally recovers health.

Did the police even remotely try to find the perpetrators?Although he was shot seven times and the potential killers left him for dead, Heaven knew that it was not yet his time to go.If you were to take things into your own hands, what would you do?

Paul,
Good comment.  I don't know if you were asking me what would I do if I were to take the law in my own hands ... but if you were, I'd have to say that I'm a 'scaredy'-cat, and would definitely allow the authorities to do what we taxpayers pay them to do.
Thanks for reading and sharing a comment, Paul.

hi ronyae,

i have to ask the same question as paul.

i have often wondered what i would do if someone did something to one of my kids, hurting them was hard enough to take, thinking someone might kill or rape them was and is unthinkable. so, if i knew who they were, i might very well be in your uncle's position. i think when someone has been shot 7 times, they want retribution, and i really can't blame them. their normal thinking is probably very fuzzy, and consequences mean nothing after what your uncle's been through. i think prayer is definitely the only sure answer for something like this. pray that your uncle will come to his senses and save his own rest of his life and turn the bad guys over to the authorities, but, someohow, i don't think that's going to happen without divine intervention.
i will pray he remembers his way,
thanks for sharing,
my best to you,
sue

Glad your uncle is on the mend. I'd be much too frightened to handle things on my own, even if I knew how. I share your concerns about him taking matters into his own hands. Let's pray really hard that he changes his mind!

Thank you for the follow up on your uncle. I hope he changes his mind about taking care of things himself. My will always gets me in trouble.

Linda,
I'm beginning to see how some people's "will" results in 'trouble'.  You are a very brave person to admit that (smile).  Thanks for reading and sharing your comment.

Hi Ronyae,

I am glad that your Uncle is doing better. I agree with you that it is a miracle. I too will pray that he allows God and the proper authorities do their job and will stay safe. I am much like my Mom, Linda DeWitt and "my will" always gets me into more trouble. Thank you for sharing.

Hugs, love and blessings,

Michelle
