The "N" Word: Stops Here ... with Me

Before I even start this write, I would like to inform my readers and supporters that this is
a very opinionated submission; a submission as a collection in reference to racism.  Perhaps, if both ends stop playing 'tug-o-war' and let the rope go, it will stay buried in the mud.  Or, will that rope turn into a stick in the mud?
But, I do pray that I share my [opinionated] feelings with others ... so, here goes:

A Letter to My Fellow Negroes

We've read in books of old, all the way through new
That this wretched term was used by old slave owners to distinguish you.  Disgrace you, belittle you.
But now, like the books, the days have grown from new to old,
And that wretched term has a new story to be told.  Now, in record stores, and at movie theaters to be sold.
What is this, reverse psychology of marketing?
"Don't count your eggs before they hatch..."
Informal conversations, jiving with friends; "It's okay, then" you chant.  But when an [outsider] attempts to fit in, you heave your chest and pout, "Not for you my friend!"
Well, why not?  You use it among yourselves in small groups calling buddies and comrades alike by the same ... sorry, buddy, "I thought that was your name."  (Do you see a catch?)...
"I'm not sure buddy, but I see a Negro that has become a hero from what many felt was a zero...did you catch that?"

Thanks for being a wonderful audience for my vents here on the Warp.  I truly appreciate it.  Stay Blessed.

Ronyae, you got the beat girl! Very well said. I think it is this way in all cultures - but I think if you are going to dish it out in what you feel is a non-offensive manner than you should be able to take it just the same. No matter what your race. Kudos to you and I agree with Avis - find a tune and let it flow :-) Hugs, Teresa

(Ah, Sista Love) Thanks T!
"going to dish it out in what you feel is a non-offensive manner than you should be able to take it just the same..."  I couldn't have stated it better myself.  Thanks for helping a sista out (smile).
I know, that Ms. Avis has some ideas made of gold, I tell'ya!  Thanks everyone, for more than your support - your guidance as well.

Ronyae,

I enjoyed this. Creative and beautifully said. There are some movies, some books, and definitely some articles I wish all the world had to see or read. This is one of them.

Thank you,

Nancy

Oh, Nancy!  Thank you for that compliment.  It makes it all worth the vent.  I applaud you because it takes an even [open] more to recognize the same.
Stay Blessed, and it was great seeing you on here today!

As a person of color and one who teaches diversity (since 1988) I can relate to your notion. I think you are saying that if one can use the N word, then all should be able to use the N word. If that is the case, then I get it.

My thought is that "no one" should use it. See my blog at www.lettinggoofstuff.wordpress.com where I write about this very thing.

Nice piece. Thanks for sharing your opinion.

Great article. Well done.

I like. I would never use the "N" word unless in a quote.

I see the same thing in the gay community where its okay for 'us' to say it but not 'them'. Bottomline is people used the words because they didn't know better but there is no excuse now because we do know better.

Robin!  A person of mine own heart - Fabulous comment, and much needed.  Thanks for reading and sharing a great comment.
Perhaps, if more of 'us' take the time to stop, actually, from allowing the terms [okay], then the chain reaction-effect may take place.  Thanks Robin, and Stay Blessed.

I couldn't agree more. It drives me crazy when anyone uses the word. I just don't understand it. Thanks for writing! Tracey : )

(smiling hard) I can feel the heat in your words, Tracey!  LOL, but it's a serious matter that MUST start - to - stop somewhere.
